The boys and I love watching Food Network, they often ooh and aah over the fact that people actually cook. Okay, I do bake and cook but nothing like these people, Aldi and Walmart don't sell the fancy foods they cook with. I do make the trek to Whole Foods/Harry's Market every once in a while to get Micah's vegan food since vegans don't eat anything with milk or eggs in it. The last time Kelly and I were down there, it was a little too organic smelling for me, then the giant roach shopping with us in the chip isle....
Anyway, back to Food Network, the boys love Unwrapped, a show about how they make candy and goodies. It's usually followed by Good Eats and they love the science that Alton Brown does with the food. I often look for Alton at our Harry's store since he films in the area, but maybe he doesn't shop on the days with the roaches and their mini shopping carts like we do. Alton has this theory about not getting kitchen gadgets that only have one use, but then Alton doesn't have my sons. You would think our garlic press can only squish the garlic but it's obviously also an Play Doh extruder, chocolate smasher and bug crusher. Just look at it...it screams to be used as a torture device.
Then we have the Bagel Slicer.
Not that I make bagels or buy the bakery ones that are fancy uncut ones, but the cheap pre-cut mass produced ones. I really use it for cutting bread (our homemade kind, see? I do make somethings) when you get down to that little hunk you can't cut right. Alton might say that it has one use only, but the boys have often used it as an extra baseball gloves, for a puppet, giant tweezers for picking up dead bugs and for pinching each other.

are single use too, but they have worked as chop sticks, smelly sock picker upper and again pinching your brother. It retrieves sandwiches from the VCR very nicely too.

used for corn on the cob. However it can be used to spread butter on the arms of the couch, a little brothers arms and legs, and also squishing it out in a fun pattern to leave on the floor so when burglars break in to the house, they will slip and fall with enough time for us to call the police. Or for just Mommy to slip on. Match Box cars are lucky to also use this a garage at times.

Hand cuffs if you are wearing long sleeves too. You can also spill some sitcky goo on them, clip them to Mommys hair so they get really stuck and she has to cut them out. Just an option.
The strainer....it does have the approval of Alton because you can strain many things in the kitchen. However you can also strain tadpoles out of your baby pool with it, wear it as a villain's hat, and it makes another wonderful Play Doh extruder. On the other hand it doesn't work well separting leaves from mud.
Now if I could only think of a good excuse to get this:
